Subject: Update WOW wk 1/6/2008: 5th & 6th Grader at PCAC Sunday School

HiAll,
It's the first Sunday of year 2008 - hope that everyone had a good Christmas holiday break!
Our class continues with the theme - God Guides Us in the account of Matthew 2:13-23 where it records the event of Joseph taking the family to safety in Egypt after receiving the warning from God.
To BEGIN
The king Herod's evil plan to murder all the child below 2 years old in Bethlehem;
Imagine that Joseph had to take the entire family to depart for Egypt.
We started out with a "Bag of Cloth" (instead of "Bag Of Trick") by asking a voluteer student to put all of the clothes in the bag (we've got a) Hat, b) Jacket, c) winter slipper, d) cotton shirt, etc.) in a 2 minutes limit.
This intends (hopefully) to inject the idea of sudden plan change without having too much time to prepare or react to it ... just like the night that Joseph had to "pack up and leave".
HE is our Refuge
It's clear in God's eyes (or/and His plan) and yet we struggle with it.
Next, we played a game of "re-constructing" hand-made jigsaw puzzle pieces. Boys and girls teams are competing with each other to see which team gets to see the "entire" pictures (see attached JPEG files used for puzzle pieces) ; One of the pictures is the portrait of Magi travelling to visit Jesus with the star shining in the sky, pointing the direction.
While students were rushing to put back the puzzles, it reminds us to learn to see the BIG picture - God's plan, as we walk the faith journey.
What-IFs
God is our protection. However, if we dont trust Him with submission, outcome may result differently. To impress the concept, several what-if questions were prompted to kids:
1) What-if Joseph did NOT leave at once and continued to stay put (want to sleep mroe)?
2) What-if Joseph decided to go back to a different city or place that he is more familiar with?
The idea is to stress the point of Obey (submission to) God's plan/message/guidance.
Key verse: Nahum 1:7,
"The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble".
A bit of personal Sharing
I get to share abit of personal experience when my Son Steven was born - who had some birth complexity and at the end, we were amazed and blessed with God's deliverance and protection.
Challenge(s) to students
I used a football helmet as an Object lesson; Life can be a football game - our ultimate Coach - God, guides the team player for a position to play.
If you are a running back, you're expected to carry the ball and run to the End Zone. Sometimes, Coach may assign you a different role - it takes hardwork/practice, and obedience and discipline to get it done!

[NOTE: I noticed that girls are less-involved with (or interested in) the football than boys. :)) I guess I'll try something different next time]
Encourage your child to stick with Bible reading plan 2008.
KLUP!
-Sam
