Subject: Update WOW wk 12/30/2007: 5th & 6th Grader at PCAC Sunday School

Greetings, everyone,
Firstly, wishing a Happy & Blessed New Year 2008 to you and your family!
For the 12/30 class, we covered the theme of Matthew 2:1-12 where the foreign visitors worship Jesus - maggi, that is.
Openning
When it comes to worship, the style and/or format can be different from person to person or from group to group. The matter in question is the true content.
To stir interests among the students, we did a quick "food preference/favorites" survey:
Among the 1) Sushi, 2) Fried chicken, 3) French fries, and so on, each kid prefers slightly different food. It can be due to the culture each individual was raised from. It helps to bring the next point that some different people who worship Jesus differently from what we normally do today.
Come to worship HIM
Three envelops which has three separate bible verses as below,
A) Luke 2:8-20
B) Luke 2:25-32,
C) Luke 2:36-40
Students get to study the envelop" and challenge to answer the following questions:
a) Who in the passages worshiped Jesus?
b) Why do you think they wanted to worship Jesus?
Part of the intention is to encourage students to systematically "observe" what messages the scriptures are trying to convey, by focusing "WHY" and "WHO", "WHERE", if any.
Envelop.Game (Memory game - matching)
Next, to re-enforce students' memory on verses and its associated meaning, we play a "envelop game"; There are 26 envelops, and each has a index card with a different verse written on it. For matching purpose, there are 13 pairs of distinctive verses and are randomly distributed in the 26 envelops.
To name afew, these are the verses: 1) Majesty in Heaven, 2) Children of God, 3) Light of the World, 4) Immanual, 5) God's plan to prosper, etc.
To win, boys team and girls team need to find the matching pairs - the more the better.
THIS IS NO LAUGHING MATTER - They are serious and into the game!!
Via the competition, we bring out the messages of "HE is worth of our praises and worship".
Back to verses
On Luke 2: account, the foreign visitors (the wisemen) from the "east" came to look for the Son of God - Jesus; The things they brought are gold, frankincense and myrrh
  • Gold represents Jesus' kingship, not as an earthly king but a heavenly one.
  • Frankincense represents Jesus' role as priest, he is the perfect intermediary between mankind and God.
  • Myrrh, associated with death, represents Jesus' role as Saviour, in connection with his ultimate purpose of sacrificing himself to redeem mankind.
Wrap UP
We ask students to flex their creativity to design a theme to worship Jesus using 16 popicle sticks (wood sticks).
Was I surprised!!! Boys group come up with a "Star" and "Cross" to denote the birth and the death of Jesus. I have to say, "You'd be pround of your child".
I'd like to share with you a new year resolution message I found on internet (attached).
Once again, Happy and Blessed New Year to you'all!
KLUP!
-Sam
