WOW: wk3 3/21/2010

Hi parents,

ON 3/21, I was out of the class due to possible Flu - I felt that it is safe for me NOT to attend and teach the Sunday school class.

I appreciated that Kate stepped up as my substitute teacher; Thanks to Kate.

Here is her updates on the 4th-n-5th grade class;

From Kate's e-mail:
====BEGIN ====
The passage studied was John 13:1-17.

- the key points are:
. to love one another and serve one another

- the key verse is Mark 9:35b

- Lesson Intro:
. used 2 examples to illustrate how we can and should serve others
1. youth's 30-hr famine event this past weekend (serving through fasting and prayer and raising fund for the needy)
2. the story of a Plano youth (PWSH) who was honored nationally for his service to the community (see story at http://www.thestreet.com/story/10677318/1/texas-top-two-youth-volunteers-selected-in-15th-annual-national-awards-program.html)

- Personal Involvement:
. students shared 1 thing they did to serve others during Spring break
. students were asked if they'd be willing if asked to clean up the restroom - most said only if they did not have other choices, some bluntly refused

- See what Jesus taught us about serving others. Read the Bible passage and discuss.
. By washing his disciples' feet, Jesus set an example for his disciples (and us) how they should serve one another with humility
. the character Jesus demonstrated: love and humility (The greatest thing Jesus did that showed these attributes is: The Son of God came to earth and sacrificed His life to save sinners like us.)

- Application - Daily Challenge:
. Each student received a chart with various services the student can perform and the days of week on which the service is performed. Students can mark the service they performed & date it in the appropriate box in the chart. They can add additional services that were not listed in the chart. Students can bring the chart back to the teacher at the end of the quarter and see what happens.

- Key Verse practice: (Mark 9:35b)
. Students randomly passed a ball around and said a word of the key verse each time he/she received the ball. After 2 rounds, they were able to finish reciting the verse (20 words memorized) in 42 seconds, including passing the ball.

??? 的器皿

Some of my favorites verses:

提後2:21 所以人若潔淨自己,脫離這些卑賤的,就必成為貴重的器皿,分別為聖,合乎主人使用,預備行各樣的善事。
提後2:22 你要逃避青年人的私慾,同那清心呼求主的人,竭力追求公義、信、愛、和平。

WOW: wk2 3/14/2010

Howdy parents,

I know for most of you, this is the beginning of the Spring Break in your respective ISD.
We still have fairly good student attendance on Sunday.

Theme: Luke 15:11-32 - Parable of the Lost Son
(and yet who do you identify with? the Lost Son? or his Brother?)

As the class material suggests it, our goal is re-emphasis the Loving, Compassionate, Forgiving Heavenly Father.

Ice-breaking Game: (Miss the target/mark - dart game)

It's no strange game to most of the kids - aiming the dart and 1-2-3 set to go!
The main idea we're trying to bring out is "Sin" - as in greek word, the meaning of it reads, "Miss the target".

As usual, we divided entire class into two teams, boys and girls. Each team has four (4) chances to score while they aim the dart. To my surprise, girls score 22 points while 9 for boys. :)

Needless to say, that everyone gets excited about the game - the analogy is to transform the dart (miss the mark) game into "Sin" concept; Or rather, the transgression and miss-the-mark (as in God's standard).

Next we went straight into the verses - Luke 15: 11 -32 (路加福音).

I suppose the highlight of the parable lies in verse 32,
"你這個兄弟、是死而復活、失而又得的、所以我們理當歡喜快樂".
Video Clip Viewing:

The parable renders itself fairly clear to the students as they grab the 小兒子's foolish act and decision to ask his father, 家業分給我...

I found a 3-parts bible teaching clips that feature the Lost Son parable; To illustrate the story, we show the 2nd and 3rd part of the video (approximately 10 minutes in length).

In particular, we focus on the last part of the parable where the Father was revealing his mercy/compassion;
Verse 15:20, "他父親看見、就動了慈心、跑去抱著他的頸項、連連與他親嘴"

What a vivid picture to portrait our Father in Heaven!

Preview on "Building God's Kingdom" board-game:

Due to time shortage, we had to postpone our board game: Building God's Kingdom - one house at a time. (see Fig.) We'll try it next week. (some kids already shows excitement)

Verse memorization:
Nehemiah 9:17b
"你是樂意饒恕人、有恩典、有憐憫、不輕易發怒、有豐盛慈愛的 神".

Shortly before the lunch break, guess what? the class asks for another dart game :))

We did, and here is the final score:
Boys: 38 points
Girls: 41 points

Until next week... have a wonderful and God-blessed week!

WOW: wk1 3/7/2010

Hi parents,

This is our first week in new 4th-n-5th grader Sunday school class of Spring quarter.

May I say, spring is in the air? (not the allergy season I hope :) )

First of all, rules for the class;
We only have four (4) rules :))

1>Respect each other.
2>Sit Properly.
3>Verse memorization.
4)Pay attention and participation.

And guess what today? I am so proud of your child - everyone paid 120% attention and the participation in the game (see below) is all-hands involved!!!

Main Theme: (Right Fruit, Right Tree [路加福音 6:43-45] - an analogy to denote people (good/evil) in terms of bearing fruits as we grow up)

We started out a show-n-tell using fruits, apple and lemon today.
How do you tell lemon tree vs. apple tree when they are small?
Even they can be similar, we can somehow tell the difference between each respective seed, right?

Fruits of the Spirit:

This would bring up the point of "good" vs. "evil" people concept; The point cannot be complete without partnering with the Fruits of the Spirit;

that is.,
Gentleness, Joy, Kindness, Peace, Self-control, Faithfulness, Patience, Goodness, and LOVE.

[聖靈所結的果子、就是仁愛、喜樂、和平、忍耐、恩慈、良善、信實、溫柔、節制.這樣的事、沒有律法禁止。 ] { 加拉太書 5:22-23 }

Some questions for brain-storming for the kids to ponder:

Q1) Can you save yourself (say, to be a "better"person)?
Q2) Have you been angry before? Raise your hand if you have not been mad before? (No one raised their hand) Or, raise your hand if you have not been so joyful before?
Q3) We seek out to rely (or depend) on God's help to guide our path and the steps we take. Or do you simply depend upon your own intelligence, might, strength, etc.?

Draw your envelop message:

Next, we split boys and girls into two groups - Boys in a group, and girls the 2nd team.
Out of four (4) envelopes prepared, each team would pick one and draw out the messages on a piece of paper inside the envelop.

One message is from Luke 6:45a, where it says,
善人從他心裡所存的善、就發出善來.惡人從他心裡所存的惡、就發出惡來.

What a creativity your child demonstrated via the painting!

To make it interesting and encourage more participation, I made it a guess match;
Boys are to guess what girls' team drawing and vice verse. Our class room helper (big Thanks to Maria!) gets to be the judge.

End result: each team gets 1 point!

We spent some time to drill down each drawing to discuss about the verse/message.

Game of the Day: "God, the Father"

The focal point of the game (Texas-sized (giant) cross-word puzzle - picture below) is to bring out the personal figures in the Bible who has demonstrated great faith in his days of life; Among the figures, there are King David, and Abraham., and God's characters, such as Merciful, and Just.

We have 7 Down tips and 5 Across tips - total 12 tips to choose from to complete the puzzle.

As the competition intensified, so does each boys and girls teams.

Some of the tips are, for instance,
a) Loser's place --yields--> Last
b) Start -> Beginning
c) Someone who meets other's needs (this one is difficult for both teams) -> Provider
d) Love in action -> Loving

Oh boy... the game got to the peak as each team won 6 points!
Final score:
Boys: 7 points
Girls: 7 points

These points are to be summarized at the quarter end.

KEY Verse:
Matthew 5:16
"Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds".

LUNCH time:
Pizza is served. Thanks to Steven who helped out and led us for prayer before the meal.

Until next week...

永遠不渴

(約翰福音 4:1-20)
“人若喝我所賜的水就永遠不渴。”

Some ideas: bouncing around within myself

WOW : 3/7/2010

Ice-breaking:
Bring some real fruits sample: Lemon, Lime, Apple, etc, and plants.
Do you know which plant bears what kind of fruit when they grow?

Basic points of the lesson for little ones:
  1. What are the fruit/fruits of the Spirit of God?
  • Can you get grapes from a thorn bush?
  • What we plant is what grows. If we plant seeds (actions) of temper tantrums or being mean to others, what will grow?
  • Seeds of the fruit of the Spirit always grow good, sweet fruit.
  1. Ask the kids what love looks like (God's love(agape)--not feelings)? What does the fruit of kindness look like? etc.
  2. God can help us when nobody else can. HE will help us to grow the fruit of the Spirit if we ask for his help, his Holy Spirit, every day.
  3. Even when Holy Spirit living in us, we still have to choose (notice: your choice) to listen and obey God each day.
And you may wonder...

Get a Fruit Banner: (team hands-on activity)
  1. Team effort to create a "verses centric" banner on white board.
  2. The verses come from Luke 6 theme today.

Texas-size Cross-word puzzle: theme, God the Father
There are 5 Across and 9 (or 8) Down tips for completing the puzzle.
Divide the class into two teams (most likely, Bogs vs. Girls - new idea, huh? :))

Each team gets to pick their name. Ready? 1-2-3, GO!

(NOTE: Picture to be posted later)

Material used: FaithWeaver schedule, March to May 2010

Here is our schedule: weekly theme, bible point, verses ...

Wk 1: (3/7)

{ Good Tree, Good Fruit, Good Foundation }

Luke 6:43-49

[43] "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.

[44] Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.

[45] The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.

Hi parents,
THIS IS IT - we've reached the end of our quarter... what a blessing to have all of your child in the sunday school class!
Main theme: the Woman by the Well... (arrh, some of you may say, it's a famous account in Jesus's outreach to the woman - a Samaritan woman, 撒瑪利亞的婦人!)
Verses: John 4:4-32

Ice-Breaking -or- Attention.Grabber
Using a normal auto jumper cable to illustrate the concept of drawing "power" from a running vehicle to jump-start a dead-battery...
It's not the vehicle that is dying but rather its battery running out; Mapping that to our spiritual life, what is it like to have a abundandant life that always enjoy the living water flowing out of you!! As Jesus outreach to the woman by the well, he's pointed right into the center of her issue : married to 5 husbands (what a shameful and painful experience in that time!!) and still searching for truth and meaning in life.
Highlight of the verse: John 4:14
人若喝我所賜的水就永遠不渴.我所賜的水、要在他裡頭成為泉源、直湧到永生。
Challenges to student
Are you thirsty for eternal life just as your physical need for the water?
What a promise made and offered by Jesus: he said, "shall never thirst "!!
Mysterious Guest:
Several weeks back, I've made contact to E3 ministry to arrange someone to come in (portraited as a Mysterious Guest) to share with us the ministry they've been involved in South America.
Due to schedule conflict and other commitment they had, the physical presence cannot be possible; However, we managed to show students the mission trips they had to Bolivia and other parts of the South American via Video and PowerPoint slide.
Our point is to encourage students to live out the faith by actually going out - Mission trip is a typical example.
Some of their blog from E3 trips:
Pep.Talk (yeh, sort of)
The class may come to an end - actual faith journey has just began as we train up our child in the way he/she should go in God's path/words.
Thanks for the support you've been be part of PCAC's school effort. Look forward to seeing your child to continue growing in God's WORDs.
Keep Looking UP!

Hi parents,
I'd like to update you on last Sunday class; Sam was out sick - flu came down to me.
To be safe and abit of pre-caution-minded, I've asked sister Shirley to be my substitute.
BIg THANKS to Shirley for her kindness.
Here is the updates from shirley:
===== Update from Shirley on 2/17 class =============
In our last Sunday class, we learn 'new-birth' in Spirit through Jesus teaching to Nicodemus (John 3). We discussed in three topics and each kids shared how they can apply to their daily life through this teaching.
1. Born of water and Spirit, whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
All kids in our class believe in Jesus and accept Jesus as their personal savior. I encouraged they to be baptized when they go to youth group.
2. The reason Nicodemus went to see Jesus at night may be the peers' pressure.
I asked them do they have the same issues at school or outside the church when they share their faith with others and I encouraged them to pray that God can strength them to share faith with their friends.
3. Connected the verses John 3:19-22 with last class's verse Matthew 5:16.
Every one shared their ways to be light and salt in their daily life. I also gave them some examples how to walk with God in my daily life.
We all prayed at the end of class, every kid either thanked God for the great learning or asked God to help them to apply the teaching to their daily life. They are great.
Please forwards this message to their parents and they can continue to edify their kids in spirit life.
In Christ's Love,
Shirley,

Hi everyone,
Now that chinese new year is behind us - wishing you a new year (Rat) --
( ¹«¦~³ß®ð¬v¬v,·s¥Í¬¡»X®¦¼Ö!! )
This is week #11 (wow, time does really fly!)
Main Theme
We focus on Matthew 5:13-16, the verses followed the Beatitudes teaching that Jesus gave. These verses denotes the role or function that each Christian is to do and to be in this World --> Salt and Light.
Game Plan (acting out)
Out of four cards with picture and illustration, we ask two by two volunteering students to come out and act upon the card they draw.
1st scene: Two sibling walked down a deserted higjhway at mid-night after running out of gas of family car.
2nd scene: A mom and her child took refuge in the basement in a stormy night with tornado warning while the electricity went down.
3rd scene: Two young friends went scared of the dark, while spending a sleepover night watching a scany movie.
Imagine the creativity of your youngster! They do know how to act! :))
Game Point
The point is to bring out the common element - Light! (in three scenes, Light is what's missing) - Being a LIGHT house/pillar, we can help others see Jesus.
While we strive to do that, the light is NOT to be hidden under the table but rather to shine among the World to point the way to Jesus!
One More Pitch (Salt) - vinerger + salt
A bit of scientific experiment would help; We add a springler of salt to a small bottle of vinerger - it becomes a cleansing liquid; Then we throw in an aging dirty coin in the bottle.
A few minutes later, the coin comes out shiny! (where did all the dirt/stains go? )
Yet another nature of salt is to enhance the food flavor.
One of the characters of salt is that it enhances whatever it's added to. Just as what salt is to change and preserve, Christians are to change the flavor of the whatever environment we are in. And that takes our committment to God and be willing to lead a holy life!
Some bonus: using Eye structure
Using eye structure (anatomy), I tried to illustrate the wrongness of evolutionist ; It is NOT possible for human eyes to even undergo any "combination" or "evolution" - whose main point is that so-many trials-and-errors would eventually strike a "successful" bang!
Since we are talking about "Light" - the way human eyes were created is so wonderfully made/designed by our Creator. No light, there is no way to human to "see" - retina cannot even capture the image that comes thru the cornea.

Go and make your light shine!!!

Greetings (& happy chinese new year! - around the corner)
This week, the theme is about the right attitude - in the light of Matthew 5:1-12, the account of Jesus giving the Sermon on the Mount.
(NOTE: a reference link at wiki, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sermon_on_the_Mount )
Openning with Pizza Box (empty one)
A quick eye catching object : Papa.Jones's Pizza box. Well, an empty one of course.
On the pizza box cover, it lists a bunch of ingredients - Real Cheese, fresh mushroom, Real meat, Fresh Sauce, and so on.
It's the "Real" word that I'd like to ice-breaking the class lesson where it brings out the authenticity of a person's true character traits. You wont like "fake" cheese or "stale" not fresh ingredient... Likewise, when it comes to true character in a person...
Are you a true christian? What are the right attitudes per Jesus's teaching...
The Beatitudes
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
And word - beatitude, needs a bit of explaination;
The Beatitudes (from Latin, beatitudo, happiness) is the beginning portion of the Sermon on the Mount of the Gospel of Matthew.
Sharing a beatiful presentation of Beatitudes by Nancy Vidad. (*attached)
A better or more fitting explaination for "Blessed" in this case would be "totally and deeply satisfied" (in the Lord). Somehow, the word "Happiness" does not quite cut it.
We spent quite a deal of time to focus on each beatitude; First 6 ones, may we say it's concerning an individual's traits while the next two (2) are applicable to the people/world around you as we step out to the World as the witness to Jesus Christ.
The "Poor In Spirit" marks the beginning of a person's acknowledge to Jesus and self awareness of "inadequate" - sinner, that is.
A PC support dialogue (drama play)
We played a drama play concerning PC support dialogue between a customer and PC tech support person; The center of the call is about "Installing LOVE program".
Using computer terms, such as openning "Heart" (CD drive) in order to install LOVE, and copy "Forgive-Self.exe" and "Ack-limitation.Doc" files and deleting "Verbose-Self-Critic.exe" program...
The idea in this presentation is to practice the "love one another" teaching as we grow in faith. With the right attitude, we are better equiped.
In Summary
To re-enforce the memory, we did an around of cross-word on a sheet of paper to fill in the 8 beatitudes.
Reminder:
This coming Sat. night, PCAC is to hold a chinese new year program with dinner at 6:00PM and followed by program show. Look forward to seeing all of you!!

C Sunday School

HiAll,
It's week 9 into the quarter; And we are ready for a quick review - this time, I did something different, via a board-game featuring Bible-theme, challenge questions, good deeds, fun-pack "community services", and many more.
A lighter Lesson: Bible-theme based board game
Some of the kids call it - Biblology - or similar to Monopoly board game, except that we have "Faith Cards" which provide "Faith Check" by challenging students the questions about the lessons we've learned so far.

Main Theme
This week's theme is on Matthew 4:23-25, in which portraiting Jesus went thru towns and villages, healing every diseases and sickness, etc.
Main point? ===> Jesus wants everyone to come to Him. (and how many people today are still running away, turn down the invitation, refuse to acknowledge Jesus, etc...)
Notice the word, "every" in Matt. 4:23, which is such a promise and powerful statement. Even modern advanced medical technology we take for granted, we cannot even say/claim that we can heal/treat "every" disease and sickness.
He IS Almight/great Physician
Here it depicts different kinds of disease/sickness:
1) severe pain,
2) the demon-possessed,
3) those having seizures, and
4) the paralyzed, and he healed them.
Out of those various sickness, it covers basically two categories: Physical being and the Spiritual one. And Jesus heals and saves!
Back to Board.Game: Building GOD's Kingdom (**attached JPEG pic)
Boys and girls team up to have 6 players;
Each player beings at the starting point - "In The Beginning" cell.
Rolling a dice (with number 1 to 6) determines how far (in terms of steps) they can travel along the game board.
HowTo Play
On game.board, we have Bible city/location and "Faith Check" square, "go Serve your Community", and tricks (such as "Go Meditate" - that means you skip 1 turn to meditate while everyone else continues to proceed).
If player answers the "Faith Check" question correctly, he/she gets a green "brick", to be used as foundation to build GOD's kingdom one house at a time!!
When hit "Community Service" square, one is to get a "Community Service" card to find out what it is; It can be "Help parents to wash dish next week", or "Go around and shake everyone's hands and say 'God loves you'"... etc.
Feedback
Oh boys!! Kids went excited about the game ... well, for about 15 to 20 minutes. It appears that girls are more interested than boys... Hmmm... you would woner?! :))

An Interesting Note
Due to the verses on healing "demon-possessed", a questions was asked about the "Chi-Kong" (氣 功 ).
I was abit of surprised to hear the question; Anyway, in a nutshell,
I've suggested that Chi-Kong's practice or ideology (emptying one's mind) contradicts with bible teaching about "Be Filled with the Holy Spirit".
There have been some contraversial topics and discussions concerning about...氣功,
where it 從實踐上和思維上非常類似于巫 術... 并且,由于深度的入 静,容易受外界干扰而产生偏差(即所谓走 火入魔)。
I'd encourage you to get prepared with the subject - talk to pastor about this if you feel necessary.

Subject: Update WOW wk 1/20/2008: 5th & 6th Grader at PCAC Sunday School

Greetings,
Week 8 now - going strong as we focus on "Getting to know Jesus more, in depth".
Main theme
The center accout is John 1:35 to 42, where Andrew and Peter meet Jesus.
Firstly, we welcome a new student - Pam, who joins us the first time in this quarter.
Then a quick review/recap on John the baptist concerning his messages about Jesus - "Behold, the LAMB of God" as he met Jesus, who took away the sins of the World!
Review/ReCap:crossword puzzle
We played a BIG poster version of crossword puzzle (see attached GIF file), where girls and boys compete on completing the puzzle. It's a very close call!
In total, we have 8 "Across" questions and 5 "Down" questions, and each one is used to impress student's memory and bring the meaning of each answer;
For instance, the "Place where God lives" and "To turn away from sin".
Jump into verses
John 1:35-42, where we get to look at the reactions from Andrew and Peter when they meet Jesus. A question about the meaning of Peter's new name when Jesus changed Simon's name (Cephas...) To my surprise, no student knows about it - Peter)
It comes from the Greek word πέτρα (read petra, in Latin used as petro-), meaning rock, or cliff. The "ROCK" later becomes the disciple of Jesus, the leader of twelve disciples.
What a life-changing experience!
What a life changed when encountered with Jesus!
We extended a call to the students and encourage them:
Are you willing to be the children of God as it's recorded in the John 1, Peter's example?
Behold vs. See vs. Watch vs. Look
What a introduction that John came up when he met Jesus!
We touched upon the "word" - Behold, which can be regarded as an introduction to the audience about an important something or someone. It's different from a) See, b) Watch, or c) Look.
Truely, Jesus's divine introduction into this world, by God's plan as the Lamb of God to take away the sin of the world. HE deserves all of our attention!
More on real-life cases
If you're Andrew, what would you react? Will you invite your friend to Jesus?
If you're Peter/Simon, do you understand the meaning of "Peter", and its implication?
We plan to try a different game-plan next week - Biblology game where is similar to a card-board game; It's intended to integrate all of the lessons/verses we learned so far and make an impression to students.

Subject: Update WOW wk 1/13/2008: 5th & 6th Grader at PCAC Sunday School

Hi everyone,
By now, we are half-way into the quarter on Lesson #7 (week #7) since the December of 2007. I've been working on a "mysterioys guest" to come for a live chat about faith... Kids are looking forward to it.
The main theme is "Jesus is Baptized" (by John) in the account of Matthew 3:13-17.
Ice.Breaking
We started out with some trivia questions in an attempt to bring out the "Who is Who" or/and "Where is Where" type of guessing. Often, we dont really know a person's true identity, in the light of Jesus's identity - what He did for us.
Game: "Who IS Who"
Later, it leads to the game, called "Who IS Who",which is similar to bingo; In our case, each student gets a sheet of paper, (attached) where it has 5x5 cells/squares.
Each cell/square has a description about a person's traits, behavior, like-or-dislike, past experience, etc. To name a few, you have a) Love to eat Donut, b) Has a Pet, c) Been gone for vacation in 2007, d) Is afraid of darkness, etc.
They need to collect as many signatures as possible to fill up those cells - i.e., finding who fits the description denoted in the cell/square.
Whoever finishes the 5 cells or squares either in a row or column or diagonal gets to claim the victory!
the Point
What's the point? Getting to know someone isnt that easy - about who HE is and what HE does significant things!
It intends to bring out the picture of the account in Matt. 3:13-17, where the picture jumps out as the following,
1) Father, the (voice from the heaven, light shining thru from above)
2) Son, the (jesus himself )
3) Spirit, the (in a form of Dove)
abit of Challenge - 5x5 fashion
We went on to challenge the class to fill up 5x5 square matrix with the names that are used in the Bible to denote/describe our LORD, Jesus Christ.
I'd think that wan't easy at all and they DID it! (a good team work)
To name a few, these names are chosen by the students,
1) Redeemer, 2) Rock of Ages, 3) Prince of Peace, 4) YHWH (this is a good surpise for me ... :))
5) Alpha and Omega, 6) Son of Man, 7) King of Kings, 8) Bread of Life, etc.
For the YHWH, we spent some time to go over the YHWH name.
Some links available on the net,
You'all should be pround of your child!!
And the winner....
And the winner of 5x5 "Who IS WHo" game is.... ==> Alan!! (yeah)
Wrap-UP: What difference does Jesus make?
A whole world of difference!

Subject: Update WOW wk 1/6/2008: 5th & 6th Grader at PCAC Sunday School

HiAll,
It's the first Sunday of year 2008 - hope that everyone had a good Christmas holiday break!
Our class continues with the theme - God Guides Us in the account of Matthew 2:13-23 where it records the event of Joseph taking the family to safety in Egypt after receiving the warning from God.
To BEGIN
The king Herod's evil plan to murder all the child below 2 years old in Bethlehem;
Imagine that Joseph had to take the entire family to depart for Egypt.
We started out with a "Bag of Cloth" (instead of "Bag Of Trick") by asking a voluteer student to put all of the clothes in the bag (we've got a) Hat, b) Jacket, c) winter slipper, d) cotton shirt, etc.) in a 2 minutes limit.
This intends (hopefully) to inject the idea of sudden plan change without having too much time to prepare or react to it ... just like the night that Joseph had to "pack up and leave".
HE is our Refuge
It's clear in God's eyes (or/and His plan) and yet we struggle with it.
Next, we played a game of "re-constructing" hand-made jigsaw puzzle pieces. Boys and girls teams are competing with each other to see which team gets to see the "entire" pictures (see attached JPEG files used for puzzle pieces) ; One of the pictures is the portrait of Magi travelling to visit Jesus with the star shining in the sky, pointing the direction.
While students were rushing to put back the puzzles, it reminds us to learn to see the BIG picture - God's plan, as we walk the faith journey.
What-IFs
God is our protection. However, if we dont trust Him with submission, outcome may result differently. To impress the concept, several what-if questions were prompted to kids:
1) What-if Joseph did NOT leave at once and continued to stay put (want to sleep mroe)?
2) What-if Joseph decided to go back to a different city or place that he is more familiar with?
The idea is to stress the point of Obey (submission to) God's plan/message/guidance.
Key verse: Nahum 1:7,
"The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble".
A bit of personal Sharing
I get to share abit of personal experience when my Son Steven was born - who had some birth complexity and at the end, we were amazed and blessed with God's deliverance and protection.
Challenge(s) to students
I used a football helmet as an Object lesson; Life can be a football game - our ultimate Coach - God, guides the team player for a position to play.
If you are a running back, you're expected to carry the ball and run to the End Zone. Sometimes, Coach may assign you a different role - it takes hardwork/practice, and obedience and discipline to get it done!

[NOTE: I noticed that girls are less-involved with (or interested in) the football than boys. :)) I guess I'll try something different next time]
Encourage your child to stick with Bible reading plan 2008.

Greetings, everyone,
Firstly, wishing a Happy & Blessed New Year 2008 to you and your family!
For the 12/30 class, we covered the theme of Matthew 2:1-12 where the foreign visitors worship Jesus - maggi, that is.
Openning
When it comes to worship, the style and/or format can be different from person to person or from group to group. The matter in question is the true content.
To stir interests among the students, we did a quick "food preference/favorites" survey:
Among the 1) Sushi, 2) Fried chicken, 3) French fries, and so on, each kid prefers slightly different food. It can be due to the culture each individual was raised from. It helps to bring the next point that some different people who worship Jesus differently from what we normally do today.
Come to worship HIM
Three envelops which has three separate bible verses as below,
A) Luke 2:8-20
B) Luke 2:25-32,
C) Luke 2:36-40
Students get to study the envelop" and challenge to answer the following questions:
a) Who in the passages worshiped Jesus?
b) Why do you think they wanted to worship Jesus?
Part of the intention is to encourage students to systematically "observe" what messages the scriptures are trying to convey, by focusing "WHY" and "WHO", "WHERE", if any.
Envelop.Game (Memory game - matching)
Next, to re-enforce students' memory on verses and its associated meaning, we play a "envelop game"; There are 26 envelops, and each has a index card with a different verse written on it. For matching purpose, there are 13 pairs of distinctive verses and are randomly distributed in the 26 envelops.
To name afew, these are the verses: 1) Majesty in Heaven, 2) Children of God, 3) Light of the World, 4) Immanual, 5) God's plan to prosper, etc.
To win, boys team and girls team need to find the matching pairs - the more the better.
THIS IS NO LAUGHING MATTER - They are serious and into the game!!
Via the competition, we bring out the messages of "HE is worth of our praises and worship".
Back to verses
On Luke 2: account, the foreign visitors (the wisemen) from the "east" came to look for the Son of God - Jesus; The things they brought are gold, frankincense and myrrh
  • Gold represents Jesus' kingship, not as an earthly king but a heavenly one.
  • Frankincense represents Jesus' role as priest, he is the perfect intermediary between mankind and God.
  • Myrrh, associated with death, represents Jesus' role as Saviour, in connection with his ultimate purpose of sacrificing himself to redeem mankind.
Wrap UP
We ask students to flex their creativity to design a theme to worship Jesus using 16 popicle sticks (wood sticks).
Was I surprised!!! Boys group come up with a "Star" and "Cross" to denote the birth and the death of Jesus. I have to say, "You'd be pround of your child".
I'd like to share with you a new year resolution message I found on internet (attached).
Once again, Happy and Blessed New Year to you'all!

HiAll,
Firstly,
Wishing you & your family a very very Merry Christmas and a Happy & fruitful New Year!
It's a celebration at PCAC - we had a splash gathering/party with all the boys and girls in sunday school class.
The main theme is about "Jesus Is Born"! (Ref: Hebrew 1:1-4, John 14:6)
Opening
Remembering the symbol (FISH sign - attached JPEG file) no the bumper sticker? (wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichthys)
We briefly went over the history of the symbol - it's all because the Son of God - Jesus Christ is born to this world for our salvation. The christ followers in 1st and 2nd century had endured the unnecessary capture and persecution during Roman Empire's reign.
[NOTE: The five Greek letters stand for the words meaning, ?Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.?
The Greek rendering is, ?Iesous Christos, Theou Uios, Soter?. ]
A quick "scroll" guess of verses
We had two hand-made scroll with empty Letter brackets for student to complete the entire scroll. First scroll depicts [T][H][E][R][E] [I][S] [O][N][L][Y] [O][N][E] [G][O][D].
It's similar to "Wheel Of Fortune", hoping to enhance student's memory on the true Identity of Jesus Christ. The 2nd scroll comes from John 1:1-2;
太初有道、道與 神同在、道就是 神。 這道太初與 神同在。
Goodie Bag (candy/choclate/etc) + Bible-Schedule-2008
Besides goodies for the kids, it's my intention to encourage each boy and girl to develop daily bible reading habit - A copy of 2008 BIble reading schedule was shared with each student. [see copy of schedule in PDF format]
On the heart of Luke 2:1-20
Famous verses for Christmas season; Several questions are set to challenge students - they are,
A) Why the messenger (angel) chose to appear to shepherds?
(Hoping to bring the characteristics of shepherds - lower social class, most likely NOT a richman, and however, the failthfulness and obedience of shepherds 'cause So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.)
B) What a blessing!! (from the following verses as heavenly host proclaimed the news)
Luke2: 13, Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
Luke 2:14, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."
C) "You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
When the king of Kings comes into this world, he was NOT given a room to stay. However, today, millions and millions of people prepare their hearts for Him - as they accepted Jesus as their Savior. Praise the Lord!
An Object Lesson
1) World Map - jesus is our direction, our guidance for Life.
2) Flashlight - who is the Light of the World?
Finally, a postcard (Christmas card) is for each student!
And once again, we wished you a Merry Christmas and Happy & blessed New Year!

Hi everyone,
Here we go again; our 12/16 updates:
Bible Point, the
The central bible point is about "Trusting God's Plan", and
the account is centering around the revelation of the news - Jesus's birth thru a virgin recorded in the book of Matthew 1:18-25.
Start-Out-Activity
Let's recognize these traffic signs: (see attached PPT/PowerPoint file)
The main point for the "sign" is to point people to a "purpose" or a end result, or a "future thing to come"... In this case, we are saying that the Immanuel. (means, GOD with US)
The it leads us into the book of Isaiah 7:13-14 verses where it reads,
"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."
[Chinese: "主自己要給你們一個兆頭、必有童女懷孕生子、給他起名叫以馬內利
〔就是 神與我們同在的意思〕"]

Reference: http://holybible.com.cn/matthew/1-23.htm

An re-enforce Game
We played a car toy game, racing on the floor mat with inprinted local community map.
Each group (divided into 2 groups) gets to choose a car and only gets to move the car using a plastic straw - they can only BLOW air thru the straw!!
They need to come up with a route plan!
1) Going from place A to place B becomes such a tough job- not to mention that there is a un-expected instructor-planned accident along the road on the map, which makes it
2) To student's surprise, some cars come with self-propel feature :))
3) They chose car by the outer appearance - SUV, cool-looking racing car, without considering the actual functionality of each toy car. (weight vs. self-propelness)
The point is to stress that personal PLAN may NOT work all the time - and it's often God's plan that carry us through.
BACK to the Bible verses
Read thru the Matthew 1:18-25 for Joseph's amazing encounter with angel from the Lord.
We focus on the Immanuel - meaning on the ending word -El, where it dentoes "god".
Similar words can be found in OT : DaniEL, SamuEL, etc.
The precious promise from the message - Immanuel - God With US, via the birth of our LORD - Jesus Christ.
OK, Time for a word game: WORD search
See attached word game [PDF] to emphasis the learning of Matt. 1:18 to 25.
Wrap-UP
We watch a Power-Point presentation with various Christmas celebration theme in motion;
I asked students to count how many symbols or objects in the slides are truly the Christmas related. Without Jesus, there is no Hope, Salvation as we live in this world.
Once again, are you "KCIC"ing?
Key Verse:
Jeremiah 29:11
WOW week
Monday: Psalm 37:3
Tuesday: Psalm 32:10
Wed.: Proverbs 3:5-6
Thursday: John 14:1
Friday: Psalm 56:3 (point: What fears do you need to trust God to help you overcome?)
Sat.: Isaiah 25:9
REMINDER/Invitation
And come and join us on Sat. (12/22) - Christmas celebration event, at PCAC

Subject: Update WOW wk 12/9/2007: 5th & 6th Grader at PCAC Sunday School

Hi parents,
Abit of delay - here is the updates on what went on at PCAC sunday school;
Main Theme:
The theme is about Jesus's Role and He's Done Great things for us!!
StartUp Point
To start it out, we played a quick "Guess what Occupation This Is" interview by having 2 or 3 volunteers (students) to explain away what this "occupation" (written on an Index Card) is.
The point is to bring out Jesus's role as denoted in Psalm 72: 1-19.
Tune Game
Later, we had a "Name-The-Tune" contest on the hymns;
We had the following pieces:
1) Holy! Holy! Holy!, 2) Awesome God, 3) Amazing Grace,
4) It Is Well, 5) When I Survey / Old Rugged Cross, 6) Rock Of Ages,
Those hymns were carefully chosen from Accappella (singing without any instruments) - by choice and design from teacher to make the recognition abit of challenging. :))
(and To my surprise, the students DID experience some challenges!)
Result? Girls won! (3 vs. 2 points against Boys)
Then we went on to each hymn to expand on Jesus's role; for instance, Rock Of Ages, points out the fact that Jesus is our fortress, and protection. Amazing grace - how sweet that is - to bring us the salvation... You get the idea.
Quick.Check-Application
To help students self-reflecting on the message,
I showed them 14 to 15 slides (attached images/pictures) on the "Carrying your own Cross" skit or talk-n-show.
Basically, it intends to encourage students to follow Jesus's footsteps as a follower without compromising His calling.
An interesting question was asked from the floor:
Q: Cannot the guy (who is the main character - you'll see once you read the slide) borrow the "cross" from others?
Answer: Nope- salvation is for individual - you get to carry your own cross when it comes to your personal faith journey.
To Drive Home:
Let's play a quick drawing game: Author(or Creator), Mediator, and Painter (us - you and I).
Three groups were formed. Each group is to complete a drawing as followed:
The way to play is to have Painter draw what Mediator told them to sketch out based on input from Author.
What's the point?
==> He (Jesus) is our Mediator between the Father and us.
Closing in prayer as we thank our Lord for being a God of infinite variety and creation!!!
WOW verses:
Monday: 1 Corinthians 15: 56-57
Tuesday: Ephesians 1:18-21
Wed.: 2 Corinthians 12:9
Thursday: Romans 5:6-8
Friday: Acts 10: 37-38
Saturday: John 14: 6
Next week? It's be a new "KCIC"ing session!

Dear Parents,
Fristly, I'd like to introduce myself - Sam Shen, that a volunterring teacher at 5th and 6th graders' sunday school program at PCAC where I believe that your child is attending.
It's a great honor to be part of the spiritual journey along-side with your child at pcac church family. And we want to also support your role as spiritual leader to your child.
PCAC children ministry has chosen FaithWeaver Bible Curriculum, which we believe that it provides one of the highest quality Christian education.
[NOTE: FW website, http://www.faithweaver.com/ ]
Today, first class, we have an openning class for the season of Christmas - where the center of the talk and matter should be our LORD, Jesus Christ.
The subject of the class - Get Ready For Jesus, takes home the message about what Christmas is all about.
We started it off with having all of the students to search thru the newspaper Ad (those shopping commercials) for the following words or figures, or pictures concerning,
1) Cross, 2) Santa, 3) Christ, 4) Jesus.
Guess what?
They found 15 accounts of "Santa" and 1 appearance of "Cross".
There are no mentioning or pictures of either "Jesus" or/and "Christ".
We need to be discerning in this world for all the influrence around us.
Later, it leads into what I called "K-C-I-C" theme (a acronym for kids to easily remember):
--> that is., Keep Christ In Christmas!! (it sounds like "KICK")
[we use it , by saying... Are You KCIC'ing this season?]
The main passages of the bible verses are Isaiah 2: 1 to 5 where it talks about the 2nd coming of the Christ - in a pictorial words, like LORD's Mountain where all the nations will stream to it. (as in the scriptures,
末後的日子、耶和華殿的山必堅立、超乎諸山、高舉過於萬嶺.萬民都要流歸這山.)
How is it possible for all the nations to stream to Lord's Mountain?
It comes back to the very root of "SIN" issue - then we played a game - Dart Board game;
Dividing the students into three groups and each group gets to shoot the dart;
What's the point?
==> driving home the main point on that "We all sin against GOD and fall short of HIS Glory".
SIN - the word in greek, has to do with "Missing the target".
As I challenged the kids about NOT relying on your personal strength but rather, confessing and coming before GOD for His mercy and salvation.
Key version: John 3:17 (Please encourage your child to memorize it - they all know about this] I've given each child a index card to write the version on and for easy safe-keeping.
Want to check your Bible for John 3:17??
==> " For ____ did not send his _____ into the world to ____________the world, but to _____ the world through him."
Following is our WOW verses: (WOW - Words of the Week)
Monday: Psalm 27:13-14
Tuesday: Psalm 130: 3-5
Wed: Titus 2: 11-14
Thursday: Isaiah 64:4
Friday: 1 Timothy 2:1-4
SATURday: John 10:14-15
Encourage your child hooked on God's Words - it can only bring life-changing results in Christ.
