WOW wk8, 1/23/2011 - G4/G5 Class
Continuing from week 7, "getting to know Jesus", we went into Lesson #8, featuring the "News About Jesus Spreads"...
Verses: Matthew[馬太福音] 4:23-25, where the news about Jesus spreads.
馬太福音 4:24, "他的名聲就傳遍了..."
We started out with 5W (Who, When, What, Where, and Why) as the class goes through the verses, and the students are asked to point out the 5W;
It is a basic exercise to help students to dig deeper into the verses and the meaning behind it - hoping that each student can get it into habit for days to come.
Next we showed a short clip from the Movie "Gospel of Matthew", where it features today's verses. It is available on the YouTube. In the movie, it covers a short account of
a drama of "被鬼附的", as denoted in the scripture, "那裡的人把一切害病的、就是害各樣疾病、各樣疼痛的、和被鬼附的、癲癇的、癱瘓的、都帶了來、耶穌就治好了他們。" (馬太福音 4:24)
Jesus heals!!
Now, let's get some actions - a car (match-box toy cars) racing (玩具賽車); The point is to relate the idea of "Trust Jesus for your guide" vs. "Rely on your own strength" in our faith journey.
Out of 6 "cars", each Boys and Girls team gets to choose three (3) cars for the race. We use the wooden table as the racing field.
Whose car that travels the longest distance from one end to the other end of the table win. As you can see, we on-purposefully put some wood blocks/積木塊 denoting life obstacles or difficulties in life journey. No one can claim that he or she will NOT face any challenges. Our hope is in Him. Do not lean on your own strength! Why "勞苦擔重擔"??
And the result? Boys won!
Memory Verse: Matthew 11:28
"凡勞苦擔重擔的人、可以到我這裡來、我就使你們得安息。"
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

WOW wk7, 1/16/2011 - G4/G5 Class
OK, week 7 now - it's all about "Getting to know Jesus".
(Isn't it a life-long journey for all Christian to get to know Him more?)
Theme: John 1: 35-42 (約翰福音 1:36, "看哪、這是 神的羔羊")
We started out straight into the verses, where a few students volunteer to read out loud 35 to 42 verses.
As part of the training on "who-where-how-what" topics, we ask the class to note the 4W items as verse-reading is in progress. After that, we show a short video clip on the account of both "西門彼得的兄弟安得烈, and 約翰的兒子西門" meeting Jesus for the first time. As an reaction, both decided to follow Jesus in response to His calling.
Next we introduce a familiar symbol: Fish symbol (see below)

How to prounce it?
Ichthys (more commonly spelled Ichthus, or sometimes Ikhthus, from Greek: ἰχθύς, capitalized ΙΧΘΥΣ or ΙΧΘΥC) is the ancient and classical Greek word for "fish".
The five characters stands for 1) Jesus, 2) Christ, 3) Gods, 4) Son, and 5) Savior.
The class enjoy a bit of time to learn the Greek word :)
OK, game time
It's about "matching index cards" that share the same Message!
We design 26 envelops in which each envelop contains one index card (covered-up so they cannot see) with a written message/bible verse that relates to lessons we've taught so far. Every two cards (13 pairs) have the same message/verse. When they play, each team is to guess two cards at a time to see if they match them.
The point is for Boys and Girls teams to reveal those matching cards, while they play the game.
For example, some cards have the verses, such as,
"I Am the Way, Truth, Life", "Children of God/神的兒女",
"Glory to God", etc.
Well... as usual, it's a close call as the game goes on. We pause and share about the message whenever a pair of cards were revealed.
Result: Girls won (7 pairs), Boys trailing (6 pairs)
LUNCH? chicken drumstick rich...
Memory Verse: John 1:12
"凡接待他的、就是信他名的人、他就賜他們權柄、作 神的兒女。"
"Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God."

兔年蒙福! (and Let it snow today :))
This is week 6 - today we focus on Jesus's Baptism in the account of 馬太福音 3:13-17.
The word, Baptism, is from Greek βαπτίζω baptizo: "immersing".

In addition, Baptism has been called a sacrament and an ordinance of Jesus Christ.
Let's read the verses: followed by a short clip that features kids' age (G4/G5) with some cartoon style rendering of the Bible reading with pictures depicted in the background.
We spent a few minutes to go into Why baptism is necessary and the meaning of "Sin" been washed away because of Jesus's salvation - his death on the Cross.

**A quick pop-quiz game**
Yes, it's a scrabble word game; Each boys and girls team gets a bag full of some scrabble word pieces; (see pictures below)
To refresh the memory, each team is to re-construct the word pieces into a verse we've talked about since week 1, beginning of the quarter.
It's not an easy task since the pieces are many. Howev
What do we have:
Team 1) The LORD is good, a Refuge.
Team 2) I Am the Way, and the Truth, and Life.
Both verses remind us about who Jesus is and what HE means to us in our faith walk with Him.
Next, a game to highlight what "Sin" is in plain English fashion.
=> Dart board game - where the word "Sin" can be viewed as "miss the target" in God's standard. No matter how we've put in much humanly effort, we are unable to "save" ourselves.
Each Boys and Girls team has 9 shots opportunities.
Oh boy... they indeed enjoy the game. :)
As you can see one of the dart, no one hit the bull-eye (the Red circle in the middle). As we counted the score at the end of the game, guess what?
To my surprise, Boys team came from behind and beat the Girls' team.
SO, our goal ...
that is, to drive home the point - Jesus's baptism showed us an example to trust in Him and via Baptism we are saying, we confess our Sin and trust in Him.
Memory Verse: John/約翰福音 1:1
"太初有道、道與 神同在、道就是 神。"
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
We gave each student a handout to work on and bring it home. Please check with your child.
OH yeh, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Subject: Re: a short write-up for the G4/G5 sunday school class
Sam,
The class was about how Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus needed to escape from King Herod (Matthew 2:13-23). King Herod wanted to kill baby Jesus and Joseph receive God's calling to escape from Bethlehem to Egypt.
In the beginning, I asked the class about things they would take when they needed to move. Then we we read Matthew 2:13-23 and discussed how Joseph trusted and obeyed God's calling and how we should put our trust in God when we are in danger.
Then I ask the class about places they would hide when they are in danger. I gave a sheet of paper and asked them to draw or write places where they would hide. I mentioned that peoples often hide in churches when they are in danger because they believe God will protect them.
Hope this helps.
Thanks
George
