Acappella - Amazing Grace

WOW wk13, 5/30/2010, G4/G5 Class

Hi parents,

Here we are - warp-up of this quarter; I've been enjoying the time spent at the class with all the boys and girls participating to learn God's words.

Keep impressing your child's mind with HIS words as Psalms/詩篇 34:11 has this,
"我要將敬畏耶和華的道、教訓你們。"

Class theme: 以弗所書 (Ephesians) 1:15 to 2:10
Center Of the message: 你們得救是本乎恩、也因著信、這並不是出於自己、乃是 神所賜的.
(For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God."

To celebrate the quarterly achievement and summer break (yeh-yeh), let's have some sweet treat for each student - 'casue they've been participating attentively!!

Matter of face, each student gets a brown bag - inside the bad, there are different goodies. :)

Let's begin with reading the verses:
So this is basically the message for salvation - not by your hard-work, but it's grace, the gift of God, that you have been saved.

Also talked about the points on Power:
Eph 1:19, "知道他向我們這信的人所顯的能力、是何等浩大、" (That power is like the working of his mighty strength,)

To further impress on the POWER concept, we tried a (fun) game - see below;

Racing game - One life, where are you heading?

Each team gets to pick 2 hot-wheel cars - the rule is to race them from one end of the table down to the other end without tipping over the table (that means ... you lose, if you did).

The team whose cars travel the longest distance (from one end to the other end of the table) win!

Well... you get to manually push (or "drive") the car - imagine how much push it would need? how well you control car's direction? The tough part comes in when you need to avoid hitting another car that went ahead of you and did not tip over the table.

Naturally, we often rely upon our own strength, smartness, intelligence, resources($money$), etc, to go about our daily living.

The focal point is to bring out the point of trusting in Christ and relying on His power in everything we do as we live this life on earth.

No matter how hard (work) you tried, the salvation cannot be learned - but rather it is by grace...

Have some MUSIC!
One of my favorite hymn - Amazing Grace. I found an Acappella at YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhcWX9VQW-M

Lyrics:
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found.
Was blind, but now I see.

What a life-changing difference it is - (Lost vs. Found, Blind vs. See)!

OK, it's been a humbling journey - and I wish you'all a safe and meaningful memorial weekend and Summer break.

Memory Verse:

See you at PCAC!

WOW wk12, 5/23/2010, G4/G5 Class

Hi parents,

Today, (wk12 - one more week, and we'll be celebrating Summer break :))
we focus on the famous LOVE chapter, 1 Corinthians/哥林多前書 13: 1 to 13.

Main focus: verses 4 and 5 (of course, 7 and 8 are essential too)

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Hmm... when it comes to the subject of LOVE, it can be difficult to tell the concepts this culture has influenced on everyone of us - say Hollywood style of LOVE.
Ice-Breaking:
We started out by asking in the class what the LOVE definition that this "World" or Culture (e.g., Hollywood) has to offer vs. the description recorded in the 1 Corin. 13. We put the responses into two columns;

Column A: God's definition (
We list man items, such as (LOVE is), protect, patience, kindness, never fail, truth, not rude, no delight in evil, not being proud, etc.
Column B: WORLD/Hollywood , where it has, action, drama, romance, "kiss", girl friend vs boy friend, etc.

What a drastic difference!
But we focus on what the Bible has to say and teach us.

Bible Verses Study:
By now, we have already read thru the 1 Corinthians Chapter 13...

As we walked thru each verse - we wrote the definition down on the white board.
Those items are to be used in our next "craft" activities - it's a team work to construct the LOVE as recorded in the 1 Corinthians chapter 13 to make it come alive!!
So we call the craft project: LOVE Construction!!

LOVE Construction :) [hands-on project to "connect" to LOVE]

Time to put you
r thoughts and belief into concrete display - that is,
using Project Poster (fold-able three panel board) !

So each team (Boys vs. Girls) is to set out to construct the LOVE definition or ideas outlined by Paul in the Bible using the materials provided in the paper shopping bag.

To guide the students in proper se
tting, each bag has 3 scissors, 1 glue, 1 3M tape, newspaper, Home&Garden magazine, and TIME magazine, some "Cross" symbol card, etc, for them to utilize to design the poster.

The team that deploys or captures the most "LOVE" definition items in the final design wins!

Then the next 15 to 20 minutes are an intense discussion, brain-storm, team-work session among girls and boys' team. I am personally impressed by the eagerness and creativity demonstrated in each and every child.

When time to present their product, each team and team member is required to explain/talk about why and what each picture/text/icon means in connection to LOVE.

They all did a great JOB!

Real-life application: Missionary video viewing:
We do not stop here - I get to present a video clip about a short-term mission trip by E3 partnership ministry - to Ethiopia in Africa.

URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjADQ0uenls

Jesus comes to earth to save us - our sin are forgiven!
Isn't this what we call Missionary in today's term?

As pastor Jaeson Ma put it in his song: (web: http://jaesonma.com/ )

True love is sacrifice.

Love is selfless not selfish. Love is God and God is love.

Love is when you lay down your life for another

Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 13: 4 to 5.

We'll see you' later... and have a wonderful and blessed week!

Jaeson Ma - new song, LOVE

Now Hollywood wants to make you think they know what love is.

But I'm a tell you what true love is.

Love is not what you see in the movies.

Its not the ecstasy, its not what you see in that scene

you know what I mean? I'm telling you right now, true love is sacrifice.

Love is thinking about others before you think about yourself

愛是在為自己著想之前,先為他人著想;

Love is selfless not selfish. Love is God and God is love.

Love is when you lay down your life for another

Whether for your brother, your mother, your father or your sister

Its even laying down your life for your enemies,

That's unthinkable, but think about that

Love is true

Think.

Chorus

I'll put you in front of me

So everybody can see

My love, this is my love

I know that I'll be alright

As long as you are my guide

My love, this is my love

Love is patient, love is kind.

愛是恆久忍耐,又有恩慈;

It does not envy, it does not boast

It is not proud. Love is not rude, it is not self-seeking

It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs

You see love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

不喜歡不義,只喜歡真理;

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, it always perseveres

Love never fails. Love is everlasting

Its eternal, it goes on and on, it goes beyond time

Love is the only thing that will last when you die

But ask the question why? Do you have love?

Chorus

I'll put you in front of me

So everybody can see

My love, this is my love

I know that I'll be alright

As long as you are my guide

My love, this is my love

There is no greater love than this than he who lays down his life for his friends

Now are you willing to lay down your life for your friends?

You're probably willing to lay down your life for your mother

your father, or your best friends

But are you willing to lay down your life for even those that hate you?

I'm going to tell you who did that

我來告訴你誰做到了這件事;

The definition of love is Jesus Christ. He is love

The nails in his hands, the thorns in his brow

Hanging on a cross for your sin my sins\

That is love he died for you and me while we still hated him

That is love

God is true love, and if you don't know this love

Now is the time to know, perfect love

Chorus

I'll put you in front of me

So everybody can see

My love, this is my love

I know that I'll be alright

As long as you are my guide

My love, this is my love

Acts 16:16-34, part 2/2 - Boys puppet show

Acts 16:16-34, part 1 - Boys puppet show

Girls' puppet show play (Acts 16:16 to 34)

WOW wk11, 5/16/201, G4/G5 Class

Hi everyone,

How quickly time fly! Here we are - 3rd week of May , already passed Mother's Day...
We'll have a quarter end celebration on May 30.

Today's theme: Jesus Saves Us.
Verses in focus: Acts/使徒行傳 16: 16 to 34 (account of Peter and Silas freed from the jail - 地大震動, 監門立刻全開)

Introduction:

Let's start with a letter - "S" - what possible words are there?
Kids responded with a bunch; Then as we added more letter - "S" and "A", and "V"...
The choice becomes less and more precise - here it comes, "SAVE" or "Savior" or "Salvation".

Straight into the verses:

It's about God's rescue - the purpose of freeing Paul and thru this event, something good is about to come out...

No doubt, this is a miraculous rescue from God - (v26 忽然地大震動、甚至監牢的地基都搖動了. As the prison guard , woke up to the empty jail cells, he is about to kill himself.

Here comes the Paul's calling to the good news - bringing Jesus's good news to this prison guard.

OK, time to "ACT" out the story:

Often, kids learn with greater impression if they can act it out - the memory will stick longer.
Here we prepared a few puppy - stuffed animal, lego character, etc.

We'll let Boys vs. Girls team to compete with "re-telling the story" their way.

Among the puppets, we have, tiger, lego guard, bear, dog, etc - you get the idea. And each team member has to participate and "act" and "say" something in their play. They need to use all of the puppets, and the more bible verses they cover in the play, the more points won!

I managed to record each play and will post them in a separate blog entry later.
And each team is creative!!!

Cannot just Talk - we need Application: (board game: Building God's Kingdom)

While the point is "Jesus saves Us", I'd like to direct kids' attention to real-life application;
Next, we introduce a home-grown board game: Building God's Kingdom - one church/household at a time!

The idea is simple - after so many bible classes at Sunday school, we need to spring into action - spreading "good news" about Jesus, and bring Christ to one household at a time;

Board game design: Each team plays in advancing the road with different stops - Jordan river, Desert, etc.

There are two special stops: Faith Check and Community Service cards.;

a) Faith Check (card) presents question pertaining to bible verses or/and what we talked about in the classes. If you answer correctly, you get a "GREEN" brick house. This is where we put in many Bible key messages to refresh students' memory on what they've learned.

b) The Community Service card gives each team an opportunity to serve the community we live in; such as "help parents to wash dishes", serving food to the homeless, etc.

By the way, Boys' team gets a "Community Service" card - that is,
***>> Bring some snacks to share with the class next week. :)

At last, here is the points won by each team:
Girls: 16
Boys: 19

This week's memory verse:
Acts 16:31a,

Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.

See you' all next week.

From www.billygraham.org

A quick sharing: from
Billy Graham website

"Read the following verses and note how people’s actions affected the following generation:
  • Joshua 4:1-7
  • Judges 2:10-11
  • Judges 8:33-35
  • 1 Samuel 2:12-17
  • 1 Samuel 8:1-5
  • 2 Samuel 7:12-
  • 1 Kings 11:11-13
  • 1 Kings 11:34

Did you notice the dramatic way our lives can affect the next generation?

Joshua and the Israelites made stone markers on the banks of the Jordan River so they could teach their children about God’s amazing provision for them. The Psalmist declared: “We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His strength and His wonderful works that He has done” (Psalm 78:4)."

“愿耶和华照你所行的赏赐你,你来投靠耶和华以色列神的翅膀下, 愿你满得神的赏赐。”(2:12)

Notice the 波阿斯然後到大衛的家譜...

導至大衛的家系不致中斷而一直延續到更大的大衛——耶穌基督!

WOW wk9, 5/2/2010 - G4/G5 Class

Hi parents,

Here we go again - G4/G5 Sunday class at PCAC. ( http://matt1914.blogspot.com )

A quick reminder: *Mother's Day out at the Park on next Sunday, 5/9 *
More details available online at PCAC Website,
Mother's Day outdoor worship at the Park(中英文部聯合戶外崇拜)

12:1 to 18, on the account of "An angel frees Peter from the Jail".

Consider this as an action movie: what would you expect? Lots of "Mission Impossible" actions!
This time, we went straight into the bible verses; OK, Acts 12: 1 to 18.
Some of the actions, as I quote,
"有光照耀.天使拍彼得的肋旁、拍醒了他、說、快快起來.那鐵鍊就從他手上脫落下來" WOW? Is that easy?

To help students practicing in-depth bible study, we quickly touched upon the basic 5-Ws:
1) Who, 2) When, 3) Where, 4) hoW, 5) Why. So we had some Q-n-A on identifying who, where the story took place, what happened, etc.

Next, let's jump into a quick game:
Finding these words from the Matrix (actually, a giant paper with 15X15 word-matrix) :)

And both teams (boys and girls) compete to find the keywords (each word on each piece of index card) out of the "Matrix".

The words are mainly from the bible verses: such as,
Herod, Christians, Gate, Arrested, Rhoda, Prayer, Angel, Guards, Recognized, etc.

Circle the word you found and the team cross-out the most words win!
Since the event is centered around Peter - notice that Angel frees Peter but not James, we have to explain abit on the WHY - God uses Peter later on to expand the gospel into Gentile (from Latin gentilis, by the French "gentil", female: "gentille", meaning of or belonging to a clan or tribe) refers to non-Israelite tribes or nations.

So the church is built on the true Rock - JESUS Christ.
To further impression on the concept of ROCK, we introduce Jenga - wood Block game. (J for Jesus? :))

ROCK/Jenga Action:

It's about building a "thing" as tall as it can be and as strong as it can be at the same time.

So all students went on to brain-storm on their TALL-n-Strong building thing. Oh boy, team work is such a beautiful thing as you see boys and girls working together. Not to mention that they get to critique on each other... haha.

Once they are done with their building piece - guess what? Teacher bring a FAN to blow them down!!!

First piece failed the "FAN blowing" test/trial. Then let's build it the 2nd time. As tall as it can be and as strong as it can be.

Kids got smart - this time, much conservative - flat structure, and stronger foothold to re-enforce the basic wall. OK, 2nd test - FAN blow from "Low" speed to "Medium" and "Hi" speed. All buildings tumble down.

Bible Point in Focus:

It's about spiritual foundation as we build our faith on the true ROCK - Jesus himself.

And as you probably guess it - kids cannot seem let go of Jenga game. LOL.
We let the class continue to play Jenga during/after lunch hour.

Final Winning Points:
Boys: 8 points
Girls: 9 points

Memory Verse: Psalm 91:11
"For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways."
"因他要為你吩咐他的使者、在你行的一切道路上保護你。"

Hope to see you all at the Park next Sunday - it's Mother's Day Outdoor worship.

Using Jenga blocks game pieces ; we hope to bring out the idea of building foundation concept.

We'll share more about the activities in 05/02 class.
