WOW week 13, G4/G5 Class 2/26/2012

Howdy,

This is out final WoW week 13, of this G4/G5 Sunday school quarter - what a blessing I have to be part of the journey!

The theme today, it tells of Jesus healing the blind near Jericho as recorded in the Gospel of Mark 10: 46 to 52 ( 馬可福音 10: 46-52).

Ice-Breaking/(引言):
Jesus often time asked people who came to him for help:
"What do you want me to do?"

A quick "Objects in a Bag" exercise for the students to decide/reason which item is in "NEED" vs. "WANT" category; We have 1) cell phone, 2) Biscotti, 3) vitamin bottle, 4) flash light, etc.

E.g., Cell phone represents something as "nice to have" for personal communication, as to the candy is not essential food for sustaining life. The medical bandage symbolizes the medicine or medical treatment such as Hospital or Doctor's care.

Key point is to bring out the what we truly need - Jesus (光明之主) - the true light of the World as the the blind man (底買的兒子巴底買) asked for healing.

Scripture Reading: (5W+1H):

Back to basics in Bible reading;
Who: Jesus, 門徒, 巴底買, 群眾們
Where: 耶利哥
What: Jesus healing the blind
How: Jesus's Miracle deed (out of His mercy)

It is an interesting question and answer session;
「你要什麼呢?」群眾們也許期待他(巴底買) 會要些錢,and yet the blind 卻說:「我要能看見」。
耶穌說:「你的救了你」!


We spent few minutes on the verse "耶穌!大衛的子孫" - as 巴底買 called out for mercy.
As recorded in the Matthew 1(馬太福音 1:1-17), it is the about 亞伯拉罕的後裔, 大衛的子孫、耶穌基督的家譜...
It is the picture of God's salvation plan - such a meaningful genealogy of Jesus Christ!

Faith Application:
Having bible knowledge stored up in the head/brain does NOT help each individual to grow in spiritual exercise. We have the opportunities to support E3 mission organization in the past,

-- the organization goes out on short-term mission to different parts of the World;

2) E3 Ecuador trip

WOW week 12, G4/G5 Class 2/19/2012

Howdy,

Today is a special day for some folks - Jeremy Lin's team - Knicks is playing against Dallas's NBA team, Mavs. :)
Well, it is a window of opportunity for parents to talk about Jeremy's story - such an encouraging figure for youth to learn from. There are surely many resources/links on internet, here is one I would like to share, at www.InterVarsity.org

OK - today's theme is in Mark (馬可福音) 2: 1-12 where Jesus heals a paralytic;
"耶穌、就對癱子說、小子、你的罪赦了! and also heals 癱子".

Ice Breaking:
We give thanks to one of the girls who drew "Community Service" card with "bring snack to share with the class next week - and she DID with a bag of chips!!
Entire class gave her a round of applause!

A quick question around the class: What are your normal NEEDS?
Students gave many answers: Food, Sun, Air, God, Money, etc.
Root issue of human is that we all sin against God, we need salvation.

Study with 5W+1H: (Who/What/When/Where/Why/How - see photo below)

Notice that before healing the paralytic, Jesus first spoken "Son, your sins are forgiven."
For some of the teachers of the law, this is such a taboo - they think Jesus is blaspheming!
As Jesus's intention is to show that
"人子在地上有赦罪的權柄 "! (Or the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...")

An interesting point was shared with the class that Jesus started out by forgiving the sin of this paralytic, instead of healing his physical body!
Often time, we ought to recognize the true root issue.
Another point was on the four friends of this paralyzed man - these four friends went through great deal of effort to seek healing from Jesus on behalf of their friend. This serves as an encouraging example. The effort involves, "拆了房頂、既拆通了、就把癱子連所躺臥的褥子都縋下來".

Next, we show a short video clip which portraits the account.


Activity- Puppy show:
We bring a few stuffed animals for the class to conduct a puppy show on the account.

As the activity goes on, it is intended for students to re-emphasis or re-Live the moment of this paralytic man's healing by Jesus. At the same time, Jesus is demonstrating here that "叫你們知道人子在地上有赦罪的權柄."!!

As any miracle, the goal is always to bring glory to God, as denoted
"眾人都驚奇、歸榮耀與 神說、我們從來沒有見過這樣的事。"


Key/memory verse: 1 John (約翰一書) 1:9
Chinese: "我們若認自己的罪、 神是信實的、是公義的、必要赦免我們的罪、洗淨我們一切的不義。"
English: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

Next week, as approaching end of quarter, we'll try to air some true testimony of missionary in video.

WOW week 11, G4/G5 Class 2/12/2012

Hi parents,

Here is the quick update on week #11, WoW Class on 2/12.

The theme is "Jesus Calms the storm" in the account of gospel Mark 4:35 to 41.
I know the highlight is always on the verse:
Chinese: "耶穌醒了.斥責風、向海說、住了罷、靜了罷.風就止住、大大的平靜了。"
English: "rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" ...

Ice Breaking:
A question for every student: what is the one thing that you are afraid of always?
Some said, bugs, (e.g., spider), height (or Acrophobia ), and other things.

Well... in today's lesson, we get to learn to which/who we truly place our faith. Not on the worldly things: such as wealth, fame, etc.

Scripture Time:
馬可福音 4:35 to 41.

Let us remind ourselves that Peter and such are fishermen - that is their job - day in and day out fishing in the sea or lake Galilee for years. Certainly, they have seen it all - in terms of different kinds of weathers and storms. And yet, this time it is so different that the boat 甚至船要滿了水!!

Jesus's power was demonstrated via his verbal rebuke
the wind and said to the waves...

We had came up with an acronym: WWW (Wind, Waves and Water) - not your regular web-surfing WWW browser address.
Jesus is in control of the "WWW". :) Trust in Him!


Video Time: A short video was shown to the student the account of Mark 4:35 to 41.

Next, it's the Action Time:
A card board game (similar to the Monopoly game) is featured for two teams (Baba-la-Baba and Fire Eagle) to race with each other - we build in the lessons into the game - hoping that it is to stir 教學樂趣!

The main design theme is "Light of the World, Salt of the World"... while we live out our faith ;
Throughout the game, each player (3 players from each team) gets to finish the race;

As the game goes on, they may run into 1) Faith Check cards (with various bible lessons we taught before) and 2) Community Service cards.

One student gets to draw a Community Service card - that is to bring some candy/snacks to share with the class next week. :)

WOW week 10, G4/G5 Class 2/5/2012

Howdy parents,

Due to other commitment, Sam had to skip 2/5 class and we are glad to have sister Maria for the substitute; It's a blast for the class - appreciated the effort.

Here is the update:

==== Beginning ===
The theme for last Sunday's Sunday school was
"Jesus Heals, Prays and Preaches".

We started with prayers and then we read Bible verses in Mark 1:29-39.
Lots of discussions afterwards on what did Jesus do to heal, pray and preach
within that one day which was covered by these verses.
Several students gave a brief testimony on how they were healed by God.
All the students grasped this part of Bible message very well, which can be shown during the activity we did next.

We did a word puzzle together which include about 20 words and all of these words were from Mark 1:29-39.

The two teams each did an excellent job. Every team was able to find the word within 1 min which was very impressive! It took me much longer to find all the words when I first fount it.

The project for the day was divided by two parts, one for each team.
The Fire Eagle team picked up the presentation topic"Jesus Cares us...",
The Baba-la-baba team picked up "Jesus cares for the world".

They used markers, color papers, drawings and pictures from magazine to present their project. Each item they placed on the poster showed what is the fear, worry, hurt, burden, etc of human being or the world, then each item is coupled with the words or drawing showing how God can heal, care, and help.

Each presentation was presented by the team leader with every team member's input.

Every student participated and the both projects were well done! Please see pictures attached.


The lunch of the day was sandwich.

WOW week 9, G4/G5 Class 1/29/2012

Hi parents,

This is WoW week 9 update; Verses Mark 1: 23 to 28, an account of Jesus's authority over evil spirit.
Jesus is all powerful. (i.e., Almighty One)

Ice Breaking:
Jumper cable is used as an object to bring out the concept of "Power".
When a car battery died, you need another car to jump-start it; Truly, we all need to recognize who the POWER source is in our christian life/journey.

Scripture Study:
This account of (拿撒勒人)耶穌用權柄吩咐污鬼, 從人身上出來!
Several points can be highlighted from the verses; As usual, the practice aims to train up students in personal study later on...

Who: 拿撒勒人耶穌, and 污鬼附著一個人, and other crowds/眾人
What: 耶穌用權柄吩咐污鬼, 從人身上出來
When: During the meeting since 在會堂裡
Where: 會堂裡
How: Amazing power demonstrated by Jesus - simply commanding verbally, "Come out of him!".
( we do not even know how, except 耶穌責備他說...)

As amazingly as it may seem, the fact that the evil spirit recognize Jesus, and calling Him as "Holy One of God!" (神的聖者), it should convinces us who the Almighty One is.

Wood block building:

An activity to let teams (Baba-la-Baba, and Fire Eagle) to construct their own "building" or tower using the wood blocks provided by teacher.

Once completed, each team is to present their "tower"; However, teacher is to apply some "trials" or "tests" to the "tower". The metaphor would be "tower" is human's own effort to exalt one's own strength!

Often time, we as human rely on our own strength rather than trusting in God's hands to help us in our faith journey. A student mentioned the account of "Tower of Babel" (巴別塔) in the Old Testament - great correlation!

A similar game is the car racing on the table; Students are to "push" the match car from one end to the other end of the table - whose car been closest to the finish line (Edge of the table) without going over the cliff is the winner.

Part of it is to self-examine ourselves that who we put our trust - is it us? Or we recognize Jesus is ultimately powerful as He demonstrated his authority in this account,
"他用權柄吩咐污鬼、連污鬼也聽從了他."

Wrap Up - Card Matching game:

Let's put the words into action; There are 24 cards/envelops with two cards with the same "words" (things students learned so far)/concepts as a pair.

They are randomly distributed in the envelops; Two teams took turn to "solve" the matching cards by guessing one card at a time.

Some of the "words" are, 1) Children of God, 2) 耶穌是世上的光, 3) I Am the Way, Truth, Life, etc.
As each pair reveal, we spent some time to re-emphasis the lessons we learned before.

WOW week 8, G4/G5 Class 1/22/2012

Hi Parents,


Firstly, Happy Chinese New Year 2012! and...wishing everyone

新年蒙恩!

Here is the update on WOW-week 8, G4/G5 Class 1/22/2012, today,
the bible theme is Mark 1:14 to 20., whose account focus on Jesus calling out his disciples
to follow him;
馬可福音 1:17, [耶穌對他們說、來跟從我、我要叫你們得人如得魚一樣.]

Ice Breaking:
We presented a few "objects" (money, food, map (symbolizing fame, since you can travel around the world)...) to the class, asking what each of you would want the most.
All of the above can be "baits" that this world can give. Or the evil one can use it to "bait" us.

However, Jesus is calling out people to follow him as his disciples.
The role is to become the "fishers of men".
(Mark 1:17: 來跟從我、我要叫你們得人如得魚一樣。)

Scripture time:

Once again, it's another time for 4W+1H practice to help students in analyzing the scriptures as if they go about studying on their own.

Who: 西庇太的兒子雅各、和雅各的兄弟約翰, 西門、和西門的兄弟安得烈
What: Jesus calling out his disciples to follow Him
Where: By the lake 加利利的海邊
When: After 約翰下監以後

It's a clever and easy-to-understand parables to use "Fishing" example to a bunch of fisher men to demonstrate the concept of what "Christ Followers" means.

Fish symbol - what it is, and what it means.

We showed a short video clip on the fish symbol of Christianity.

The English translation is
as written, "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior".
It is mission given or called by Jesus for Christ Followers, to bring people to Christ.

Activity to re-enforce the lesson:

To be a Christ Follower (disciples), it often results in trust-n-obey what Christ teaching and commands tell us to do.

We prepared a remote-control car gadget to demo the idea of following Jesus calling on a given path.

Each team gets to work on different route which was chosen by teacher.

As each team is to remotely control the toy car to go from one place to another - it resembles the mission we are called to in our daily Christian walk.
As a side note, boys seem more excited about the toy car game than the girls.

OK -- lunch time, and we have Pizza today.
In addition, since it's chinese new year, we prepared a sweet treat for each student i the class. :))

WOW week 7, G4/G5 Class 1/15/2012

Hi parents,

This is the WoW week 7 update on G4/G5 Class on Jan-15;
Main theme is "God/Jesus knows us even when we do not know him yet".

The main scriptures are found in 約翰福音 1:41 to 51, where Jesus saw Nathanael
(1:50, 在無花果樹底下看見你).

Firstly, bunch of poster with traffic signs:
Most of adults are familiar with the traffic signs on the road; whether it's speed limit, or school zone, etc. The "ice-breaking" session is to point out things/signs that Jesus intends to get our attention.
An example is "Do Not Left-Turn" below - it shows us the danger or road condition; and yet we often go on our own ways. After a few examples, this one came as a surprise for students. Knowing Jesus is the key step to the salvation.

We all love to have "Jesus Inside" sign for us instead of having the HM (Hazardous Material = sin) inside of us.


Scriptures time:
Read through the verses 約翰福音 1:41 to 51, and have students to practice the 4W-1H principles - What, Who, When, and Where, and How if applicable.
E.g.,
Who: 腓力, 拿但業, 耶穌
What: 腓力找著拿但業, 耶穌
How: 耶穌回答說、腓力還沒有招呼你、你在無花果樹底下、我就看見你了。As miraculous as it sounds, Jesus saw us even when we still do not know him yet. He is to reveal to us wonderful things.
Where: 次日、耶穌想要往加利利去

Up-Word puzzle activity:
We had a quick activity using Up-Words square pieces for two teams
to re-construct the verses; they are,

A) Create in me a pure heart
B) The Word became flesh.

It's a desire for every christian to ask God to create in me a pure heart. After all, Jesus knows each and everyone of us - and accepts me just as I am.

Due to pcac congregation meeting this Sunday, the class has to end around 12:00/noon time.
Lunch is served.

Next week, since Chinese Lunar New Year, we'll have a sweet treat for the class. :)

English:
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me
