WOW wk8, 4/25/2010 - video clip (Clay time)

WOW wk8, 4/25/2010 - PCAC G4/5

Hi parents,

Hope that you're doing great - looking forward to the summer vacations yet?
I know I am. :)

Today we introduced some crafts related activities in response to kids' requests;
As I originally set out on the G4/G5 journey, I was under the assumption that G4/G5 may gradually get off the crafts things which are often regarded as "little kids" stuff.

Oh boy! Was I wrong?!! (you'll see why later in the blog updates below)

Today's Theme: When we pray, God answers!

Biblical account: Acts 9: 36 to 43,
where it records the event of Peter's prayer that brings a disciple named Tabitha (大比大) from dead to life.

While this type of thing is rare or/and un-heard of these days, we can only take it by faith as we read thru the Bible.

Ice Breaking:
We started out by asking each kid a question:
Q: what was your favorite food/snack in your childhood?

As you can imagine, the answers pour in like,
1) mocha frappuccino (decaf) coffee drink (wow...)
2) Gold fish

3) Pringles (yo, even worse, I suppose - because it's "junk food")
4) pink lemonade

Now we switched roles, say you become a parent years later;
Would you allow your child to eat and drink nothing but the items mentioned above?

It's nice to have sister Marie who helps out in the class - as a Mom, the answer is NO!!!
Why? Because it is not good for your physical health - the nutrition is not balanced.

The point we'd like to bring out is...
<<>>

Story Time: Acts 9:36 to 43
Tabitha is dead - the Apostle Peter prayer to God and said the Tabitha,
"Tabitha, Get Up!"
9:40, 彼得叫他們都出去、就跪下禱告、轉身對著死人說、"大比大、起來"、他就睜開眼睛、見了彼得、便坐起來。

Wow - whose power is that? Peter? Of course NOT.
It is by the power of God who gives life.

Now Crafts Time:

A) Thumb paint via Red and Blue inks.

We use a book for an example just in case boys and girls need some reference.

Each team is competing to a thumb paint to bring our bible story (from last week to today) alive!

We encourage teamwork - and each one of them got up and participate the painting activity.
Needless to say, they all get their fingers some "Red or/and Blue".

I am personally very impressed by their dedication and can only praise and pray to God for continuously working in their hearts while they are still young.

After the paint, we let kids go and wash their hands in addition to the GermX and baby wipes we provided for cleaning and washing their hands.
Some may still have some ink marks - those should go/fade away as day goes by.
As you can see above, each team demonstrates their creativity in a very lively fashion.

It is one of my goals/objectives for the class to help students to soak-in bible verses/messages via participation and activities with embedded bible messages.

B) Play doh or Clay time to bring the bible story alive!

Next we continue to talk about the theme: Prayer.

In 9:40, As Peter pray got down on his knees and prayed..., God works in His miracle.
[Tabitha 睜開眼睛、見了彼得、便坐起來! ]

And this time, we let students to get some "Hands-On" work - Play Doh (or clay time).

Check out this Clay art piece - done by Girls team, where they features Tabitha's story by depicting the entire account. Notice the word - Joppa, the city (約帕) where the event took place.

They went ahead with constructing a bed with a person (obviously Tabitha/大比大 ), and a "Peter" on his knees and pray... what a Clay Art!!!

What about Boys? They did excellent work as well.
Boys came up with different idea about the Prayer theme, by showing a "candle light" and two hands that are praying.

Notice the candle's showing some tears - according to the boys, those the symbols to present how long the "hands" are praying .. the more tears, longer the time!!

I am so thrilled and impressed by the creativity shown by each one of your child.

You all should be proud about what they did today!
A few words came to my mind:
Fantastic! Brilliant!

I did capture a few video clips which are to be uploaded later in a separate blog item. Please come back to check on it.

As much fun and excitement in the class today, I even forgot to share the key memory verse. :)

OK, here is the score today - boys and girls are tied! (10 points each team)

WOW wk7, 4/18/2010 - PCAC G4/5

Hi parents,

Firstly, I'd like to thank both Kate (for 1 wk) and Pastor John (for 3 wks) who has sub'ed the Sunday school class during my absence. It's nice to have PCAC family covering for you!

It's been 3 or 4 weeks since I was gone on a trip - Shanghai is an amazing (and interesting) city. :)

Allow me to share a photo link,
Shanghai trip/photo

In addition, I brought some sweet treats for the kids. (image on the left, it may not be clear - it's gummy-like 软糖果)

This week - wk7, our theme is focusing on Apostle Paul; It's all about changes.

The biblical account is Acts 9: 1 to 20 verses, which it captures the miraculous change of Saul (later called Paul) while he was on his way approaching Damascus.

Ice.Breaking (sort of): to bring out idea of "Change"
We had one rep. from each boys and girls team. Each person is to compete to put on a shirt (provided by teacher) and need to button-up all the buttons at the front. Boy won. This is the 1st part;

2nd part is to put the same shirt - backward fashion and still need to buckle up all the buttons; Well, this time you need someone from his/her own team to help!

The idea is to bring out the concept of "Change" as in the case that our life change as we walk the christian faith - putting on a new cloth, as if this is a new creation.

Each boys and girls team get one point.

Jump into the verses:
Let's read the Acts 9:1-20.

Paul's change is indeed dramatic - when asked about the "Before" and "After" of the Paul, kids were able to quick zoom in on the verses where v1 to v8 are centering at "Before-change" Paul while v9 to v20 the "After-Change" Paul.

To help students for further bible-study exercise, we asked around the class on how difficult it may be to you to change a bad/good habit. Here are some of the things that came up:
1) making noise while eating
2) get up 1/2 hour early to study bible - THIS IS an EXCELLENT habit!!
3) try to revenge at urge.

You'll be surprised that your kids did understand how GOD uses Paul and Ananias in this dramatic event to bring Salvation to Paul as verse 15 said,
"because this man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before Gentiles and kings and the people of Israel".

(“扫罗,扫罗,你为什么逼迫我?)

Noticed that Paul or Saul rather was keeping the cloth for those who stoned Stephen to death;
(扫罗曾“为用石头打司提反的人看守衣服” )

For the word, "instrument", it's main purpose is to make music - as each one of us can be used by GOD to produce a wonderful music for His Kingdom advancement.

Then we showed a quick animation on Paul's account in Acts 9, Lego version. :)

Game time embedded with Bible.Message:

OK, time for a game embedded with bible messages; We called "Memory Card" game.
We have 22 envelops in which it houses a index card with written bible message.

There are a pair of cards with the same message, such as, "God changes my Life", or "God's plan to prosper".

Each team (boys vs. girls) competes to match the same pair of cards.
We lined up the envelops as 4 rows and 7 columns (see attached JPEG).

Kids call out the envelop location as R1+C3, which means Row 1, Column 3. They would need to remember all the cards with each bible message/verse written on it.

Quickly, the competition became intense as the game proceeded into 12 cards revealed.

When each pair of cards revealed, we took the opportunity to bring in the bible lessons relating to today's theme or re-emphasis the overall concept of life change in Christ.

Result? (for each pair of cards, you get one point)
Girls: 7 points
Boys: 4 points

Wrap UP:
Re-visit the most of the "envelops" and have some interaction with kids as they went thru the Acts 9:1-20 verses again.

Key Verse: 2 Corin. 5:17,
"If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation".

Next week, we plan for some crafts activities as requested by some of the girls.

Subject: 4/11/2010 - Wk6 - PCAC G4/5 Sunday School Summary

Dear Parents,
Last week was my last time substituting for Teacher Sam (the curriculum book is in my mail slot for you to pick up any time; I'm off on Thursdays). I really enjoyed my short time teaching and interacting with your children. I want to especially thank Helper Maria because she is both a mom with a son in our class, and a good helper!
I like to address 2 things before the summary of the Sunday School:
  1. I've noticed about 2/3 of the kids brought their Bibles. Please strongly encourage your child to bring his/her Bible to church. I also found out that at least 1 child do not own a Bible. This is the best gift one can receive. I recommend The NIV Study Bible for Youth. I've seen them on sale for $20 at Mardel. It is an inexpensive investment for your child's eternal life....
  2. There were 3 girls sitting together right next to me who's bodies were there physically, but minds and spirits were some where else. I have no idea where, but they checked out of everything except the beginning exercise. I asked all 3 girls on 3 different occasions during the teaching time (30mins) what I had just said, and none of them could give any replies. I know it's not my lack of communicating because most of the rest of the class were raising their hands eager to answer the questions.
    • Please have a talk with your child about being focused during Sunday School instruction time. If they really don't want to be at SS, don't force them. Take them with you, and worship together in the Mandarin service.
Summary:
We started with an exercise in which I asked everyone to stand in a line from the shortest to the tallest person on a tape line on the floor. The object of this exercise was for to show that they may have to take a stand on various issues in life, and some times it might be different from their friends and others. Nevertheless, how different, they need to take a stand for God, truth, and their convictions.
The following explains the game with the 12 statements that they will "take a stand" on:
  • The game:
    • 12 statements
    • If you agree, take 1 shoulder width step to the right
    • If you disagree, take 1 step to the left
    • No changing the statements or changing your responses
    • I will repeat the statements twice
    • Step on my count of 3

1. Telling a lie is OK if you can get away with it

2. People who go to church are usually better than people who don’t go to church

3. If you study hard enough, you can get an A in any subject

4. People who has straight teeth usually have greater self-confident than people without

5. Many people join a sport team or cheerleader squad to feel accepted

6. Evolution is true even though the Bible says “God created”

7. Fat people are usually lazier than slim people

8. Wearing eye glasses make someone look like a dork

9. Popular people usually have the most friends

10. Good people should all go to heaven

11. The most important thing for a Christian is to be happy

12. Rich people are usually smarter than poor people

It was interesting where/how some kids thought about these simple statements. You can learn a bunch by which way they stepped, and if they have conviction or not when they take a stand because many hesitated or changed their directions after seeing their peers go the opposite way.
This exercise led to a few other questions from me, ending with "How can we keep following God, even when it's hard? Even if we're the only person standing on the other side of the line?"
(I have to say that at there was 1 boy at the very end of the 12 statements who ended up all by himself on one side of the line opposite of everyone else).
BIBLE PASSAGE LESSON
Apostles Defend Their Faith from Acts 5:12-42.
v.12 - we talked about what is an apostle; what criteria must be met to be an apostle. 3 basic ones in the Bible.
  1. Called by Jesus (Luke 6:13)
  2. Eye witness of the resurrected Jesus (Acts 2:16-23)
  3. Sent by Jesus to proclaim the Gospel, the Good News (Acts 9; 9:15)
Are there any true apostles today according to the Bible?

v.15 – Apparently God used Peter’s shadow to heal some people

  • Jesus’ cloak to heal the bleeding woman (Mt. 9:20)
  • Paul’s handkerchiefs (Acts 19:12)
* * * we talked about some Catholic relics they worshipped.

v.17 – high priest and his associates were Sadducees (and they were Sad U See) because they did not believe in the resurrection or a personal Messiah so they had no hope after death. But they had control of the temple.

  • Pharisees – they were the teachers of the law
  • Sanhedrin – Jewish “Supreme” ruling Court (70-100; ideally to have 71 members to avoid an even vote)
* * * they were filled with jealousy against the apostles. Why?
v.19-20 – God rescued them for a reason to “tell the people the message of this new life.”
v.28 – The religious leaders were afraid to be labeled guilty of killing Jesus because of the people.
v.29 – Peter and other Apostles took their stand even in the face of arrest, physical harm and death threats, and said, “we must obey God rather than men.”

v.38-39 – Gamaliel, a Pharisee who was respected and wise. He proposed to the council to:

  • Let the Apostles go
  • He argued that if what the Apostles’ were doing were of human origin, it would fail like those other rebels; their followers scattered after the death of their leaders.
  • But if what's happening is from God, 1) you can’t stop these men, 2) you are only fighting against God. And you will lose.

v.41 – Why were the Apostles “rejoicing?”

  • Happy to not have to go back to jail?

v.42 – They continue to do what God told them to do; the reason why God let them out of jail.

What were they telling people? The Good News that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

I asked the kids, "Do you think you could have acted like the apostles under those great pressure? Why or why not? All who responded said no; the pressure is too great.

How do you think the Apostles would answer the question “What should we do when it’s hard to be a Christian?” All who responded said to take a stand for God.
I said that the Apostles and other followers of Jesus did suffer many times for their faith, BUT they kept following God, even when it got hard. And they are our examples for us to follow. And we talked about types of peer pressures they face in school and with their friends. The biggest issue your children at this age are facing is acceptance by peers. This is a very critical time to forge in them though acceptance might make one feel wonderful and belong, but being accepted alone in sin is the wrong path to take. They need to be able to take a stand on God's truth in spite of what others might say and do; they need to value leading peers toward God over valuing acceptance by following their friends doing wrong things. Ultimately, these kids need to understand and forged in them to value God's acceptance of them over anyone else.
There were a couple other things planned, but we ran out of time. One important item we didn't get to the Key Verse for the week. Please work on it with your child. It is

James 1:2-3, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance."

  • Remember the “pure joy” this week when you have opportunities to take a stand for Jesus.
  • When there are trials from God, it is because your faith is being put to the test!
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I am here to serve the Lord in the best way I can for you. Blessings in the the Name of Jesus.

Subject: 4/4/2010 - Wk5 - PCAC G4/5 Sunday School Summary

Dear Parents,

Last Sunday was a glorious Resurrection Sunday indeed. It was a whirlwind for me, but I took one step at a time with God's strength, we got it all done. ;)

It was a pleasure leading your kids again.
Next week will be my 3rd and last time before Uncle Sam returns and resume teaching.

Our Bible passage was on John 20:1-18 where the resurrected Jesus 1st appeared to Mary Magdalene. The key verse was Romans 10:9, "That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

I started by telling the kids that this is one of the very important verses in the Bible on salvation, how one is saved. I told them about an event that happened during Good Friday Children Fellowship, that during the message time, Jonathan raised up his hand and asked, "What does someone need to do to get saved?" We were on John 3:14-21 passage at the time, and specifically on 3:14-15, comparing Moses lifting up the snake in the dessert, and Jesus being lifted on the Cross that whoever was bitten by poisonous snakes, if they would just look at the snake on the staff, they would be cured. They would live and not die. Do you believe that? The Bible says, "that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life." So I said to Jonathan what you must do is look to the Cross of Jesus and believe in Him.

And so what does believing in Jesus mean? We spend a good 15 mins learning, memorizing this verse, and had a boys vs girls compitition as well to see who could recite it by memory. I helped them memorize it through understanding the verse. Too many times kids can memorize it, but lack understanding, so as soon as the class is finished, they have forgotten it. (

We broke down the verse to it's key components. "Confess with mouth" and "believe in heart" = "saved." We went into details of what/how we confess, and what/why we believe. some girl asked is it so easy? What about doing good? Then we took some time on "good works." I asked them, "What does the Bible say?" Confess and believe = saved. Besides, no works is good enough and no one is perfect; we looked at Rom. 3:23. So yes! It is that simple. However it is not that easy.... I shared with them that most everyone want to be saved from hell/sin, and go to heaven, but they do not want "Jesus is Lord" of their lives. So there is confessing of sins and turning away from it by trying not to do it again (and God is willing and able to forgive us). So confession and repentance is remembering to not do it again. Don't be what the Bible said about a man who looked into the mirror and saw his face, but as soon as he walked away, he forgot what he looked like. But the primary aspect of the "confess with your mouth" is "Jesus is Lord" of everything in our lives.....

Eventually we got to our passage of the resurrected Jesus appearing to Mary (Peter, and the other disciple, John). 2 children read in 2 large segments. angela read 1st and Andrew read 2nd. I interupted about 2-3 verses at a time to explain and question the kids.

I'll share 5 significant events during this reading.

1) John 20:8-9. v.8 says "he believed," but v.9 says "they still did not understand.... that Jesus had to rise from the dead." So one of the kids had the question, "So what did they believe?" This was a great question, and it opened up a teaching point of reading the text careful. He, John, is the "disciple whom Jesus loved," and probably the closest to Jesus since he's the one who rested on the chest of Jesus. He believed all that Jesus had said, yet without fully understood. And they just didn't understand it (as we do) from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead. The Scripture which they have was the Old Testament. We can undertand clearly because we now have God's complete revelation with the New Testament.

2) v.10-11. Peter and John left and went home, but Mary stayed ans she was still weeping. Why? I asked the kids. The disciples lived and walked with Jesus and His teachings for 3 years, but Mary only got to spend very little time, and did not get the inside teachings so she was not able to "believe" as they did. She probably didn't know that Jesus will rise from the dead.

3) v.11-12. These verses I wanted to show the credulity/reliability of the Bible because Jesus 1st appears to Mary, a woman. Women take some very prominant places in the Bible which is not the case in ancient writings. In God's eye, males and females are equally valuable. In most of human history except the last 50-70 years, men dominated society and women were considered "2nd class." A girl said, "Some places they still are....." And this event is utmost important; that Jesus is alive 3 days after the crucifixion as He said! As important as this event, if the Bible is fraugulent, surely Jesus would not have appeared to a woman 1st but a man! And because these are eyewitness accounts, they are true and the Bible is reliable and trustworthy.

4) v.13-18. I'll just make 1 quick point. Mary was talking with 2 "angels" and 1 of the angel was Jesus, but (v.14) she did not know he was Jesus until Jesus called her name, "Mary" (v.16). The significant truth I wanted to get through to the kids is, like Mary, we can be looking for Jesus, but will never find Him until Jesus calls our name..... Amy; Kelly; Angela; Grace; Andrew; Ki-tong; etc. (sorry, I don't remember all the kids names). It is God who calls us to Himself; it is God who takes away our hard hearts of stone and gives us a new tender heart to be able to believe. We don't choose God; God chooses us! Have you ever heard Jesus called your name? Of course, it's unlikely you'll hear Him as I'm talking to you now. A girl said, "It's like a feeling you get inside...." I said, yes, possible that you might have an emotional experience, but mostly God calls you through His Word, the Bible.....

5) I'll end with this. (I think this was the question. Maria, can you reply to me and verify this?). A girl asked, "How come Mary saw Jesus, but didn't know that it was Jesus? (v.14). Well, I think my mind wasn't clicking correctly at the time, and I didn't have an answer to her question. So I told her I don't know, but I'll study it and give her the answer next week. I also ask them to study it and find the answer themselves. Another girl said, "I'm going to ask my mom!" (Did she, I wonder??!). After reading it again, I think I know. Please take this good opportunity to work this one out with your child...!

Looking forward to next class!

The passage is Acts 5:12-42. Apostles defend their faith.
Key verse is James 1:2-3.

God bless you parents!

Subject: 3/28/2010 - Wk4 - PCAC G4/5 Sunday School Summary

Dear Parents and Sam,
I apologize getting this out late to you; will try to do better next week.
What a Sunday School lesson to start with as a substitute (and for this coming Sunday as well!). These are key events of Jesus' life, and significantly for Christians!! I consider it a great privilege.
For these 3 classes, I have basically 2 goals in mind:
  1. For the kids to get into the Bible, so that the Word of God can get into them.
  2. For the kids to be able to "connect the dots" (learned facts), and be able to see the bigger, true picture of God's revelation to His people, and so to apply rightly into their lives.
Last Sunday we dealt with Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem (Luke 19:28-40), and His trial, crucifixion and death on the cross (Luke 23:1-49). As you can see, these are very large passages, but we did manage to get through it with the given time.

The structure for this class was verse by verse, and each person took turns to read. I stopped and explained or asked them questions about something almost every verse. For example, 19:29, the kids need to know that Bethany and Bethphage where Jesus told the Disciples to find the unridden colt are real places, and that they are located 2 miles SE of Jerusalem (on road to Jericho). Understanding geography and places give structure to the Bible stories. Explanations, for example, are what is the significance of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a colt, and what is special about riding a colt which no one has ridden on? I also showed a couple of photos from my computer to supplement the teaching. I showed them the Mount of Olives in respect to Jerusalem. These were photos I took about 2 years ago when Catherine and I were on a DTS study tour.
Last half of the class, we looked into the detailed trial of Jesus with Jesus brought before various people of authority; explained who they were in terms of their position, and what significance they bring into the story. And this story is ultimately the murder of an innocent man attested by the fact that Pilate found Jesus 3 times nothing deserving death. Even though Pilate had the authority to dismiss the charges brought against Jesus by the Jews, he was a weak man and caved into their demands. We, Christians, know that Jesus was more that an innocent man, He was the Son of God sent on a mission, and that what happened on the Cross was the mission: to die on the Cross in obedience to God the Father, so that His shed blood may redeem us, pay for our sins, so that we may be justified, forgiven and be seen righteous by the Father God.
There are much more during our class, but find a time before Resurrection Sunday and read these 2 passages with your child.
The challenge was always put before them to see Jesus, the perfect sacrifice of God, who provides Eternal Life to those who are sinners and repent from them. And knowing all this, what will they do with Jesus....?
Thanks for reading to the end. Have a deep, meaningful Good Friday, and a wonderfully blessed Resurrection Sunday!
